Now Playing:

Andrew Ripenburg

From playing in musical productions to international jazz festivals, Niagara native Andrew Ripenburg has become an extremely versatile and passionate jazz trombone player.

He
became comfortable playing in big band settings through high school but it wasn’t until 2013
that he got his first taste of playing in the professional world. At the age of 16, while still in high
school, he began playing in pit orchestras for musicals with the Port Colborne Operatic Society
and Garden City Productions.

In 2015 he became a member of the Hamilton All-Star Jazz Band, eventually working up
to the position of lead trombone. Over his past two and a half years at Mohawk College, Andrew
has had countless valuable playing experiences. In 2016 alongside bandleader, Len Graf he
played 4 Dixieland gigs at the Women’s National Curling Tournament in St. Catharines.
Numerous times he has performed with the George Arnone Big Band and is said to be “at the top
of the list” by band-leader Dave Baldry. Other gigging opportunities include forming a quartet
to play at the 2017 TD Brantford International Jazz Festival as well as performing with the
Jimmy Stahl Big Band at the same venue.

At Mohawk, Andrew has had the privilege of studying under some great names in the
music industry such as Pat Collins, Rob Somerville, Darcy Hepner, Jason Logue, and Adrian
Farrugia to name a few.
