    James David Blackley (1927-2017)

James David Blackley (1927-2017) taught jazz-focused drums to students who went on to play or record with many of the greats, including: Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock amongst many others.

His first publication was hailed as a “Musical Gem” by Elvin Jones. His second received praise as “Percussive Wisdom” by Downbeat Magazine

His publications, Syncopated Rolls for the Modern Drummer and The Essence of Jazz Drumming have been embraced by teachers and musicians alike.

Blackley lived and taught monthly sessions and 10 day master classes in Barrie, Ontario, Canada to students and professionals from around the globe. He passed away July 16th 2017.
